Hip Hop Culture and The Library of Congress

Hip Hop Culture is generally acknowledged to have four main elements. There is the musical element of the Disc Jockey or DJ, the spoken element of Rap Music or MCing, the physical element of B-Boying or Breaking, and the visual element of Graffiti Art. To seach for Hip Hop resources most effectively, you can use the Library of Congress assigned Subject Headings for the four elements. The Library of Congress subject term for Hip Hop is "Hip-hop." The LC subject term for Hip Hop music is "Rap (Music)." To search for B-Boying, breaking, popping and locking the LC subject term is "Hip-hop dance." The LC subject term for B-Boying is "Break dancing." To search for NYC Graffiti art, the LC subject heading is "Graffiti-New York (State)-New York".
