Internship Prep: Course Overview

This guide will help students prepare for a successful internship

Experiential Learning

Any learning that supports students in applying their knowledge and conceptual understanding to real-world problems.

Internships give students an opportunity to learn in real-life settings 

Service Learning

Service learning helps students acquire useful skills, including the soft skills needed for professional engagement. The time commitment for service learning is usually 15-30 hours per semester.

Internships

An internship is an intensive kind of applied learning, and includes practica, project-based learning, clinical experiences and field education.

The purpose of an internship is for students to acquire discipline-specific professional skills and gain career experience with supervision.

Course Overview

The Online Internship Prep course is sponsored by Medgar Evers College and coordinated by the Office of Academic Affairs. This non-credit course is provided in conjunction with A.S.A.P. and the Office of Career Services.

The course will help you identify your career values and goals to get you on track for being successful in finding a meaningful internship in your field of interest.

This is a non-credit course and is a prerequisite to starting an Internship during your time at Medgar Evers College.

At the end, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Schedule:

  • Week 1- About internships
      • You will read articles on internship preparation
      • The O*NET online career assessment survey will help you identify your skills.
      • Based on the Survey results, you will make a list of your skills that you will later use when writing your resumé. 
      • You will create a user account in the Symplicity Job Portal

  • Week 2- Online resources

    You will review internship resources, determine the type of work you are interested in, and the industry you would like to work in.

     

  • Week 3- Resume writing
      • You will read the articles, watch the videos, and review the examples about how to write your resumé. Begin writing your resume gearing it towards your career choices. 
  • Week 4- Writing cover letters and a job reference page
      • You will review examples of cover letters, write several cover letters, and make a list of your job references.
  • Week 5- Your online presence
      • Create your Linkedin page and start inviting people into your network. Join relevant groups.
  • Week 6- Basic Netiquette and other tips
      • Clean up your social network sites such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. Build your reputation and continue to work on refining your web presence.
  • Week 7- Presenting Yourself
      • You will learn the importance of branding yourself, networking, and perfecting your "Soft Skills"
  • Books- Lists of books available in CUNY Libraries and elsewhere.
