This guide will help students prepare for a successful internship

Why an Internship?

Internships look good on resumés and often lead to job offers!  

  • Acquire discipline-specific professional skills
  • Gain career experience 

Completing an internship while getting your degree could make you more marketable to employers upon graduation.

 

How Many Hours?

Interns usually spend:
80-120 hours per semester at their work sites: 

Basic Skills to Know

Make sure you have basic communication skills and know how to:

  • Use a copy machine
  • Fax
  • Scan
  • Address envelopes correctly
  • Write emails and know how to attach files
  • Name files
  • Have social media skills and knowledge of the following: Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram
  • Have dual computer skills on both PC and Mac
  • MS word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Basic html
  • Make coffee

It will also be helpful if you have good research and writing skills, know basic Photoshop, and understand blog platforms such as Wordpress.

LEARN SKILLS: If you need help learning new skills please attend the MEC Library/Writing Center's free workshop series (held in the library). Attend workshops at MEC's Office of Career Services and ASAP.
