Open Educational Resources (OER)

Art History Teaching Resources (AHTR) was created by Michelle Millar Fisher of the CUNY Graduate Center and Karen Shelby of Baruch College. It is a peer-populated platform for educators who use visual and material culture in their teaching practice. Home to an evolving and collectively authored repository of open educational content, AHTR serves as a collaborative virtual community for art history instructors at all stages of their academic and professional careers.

This textbook might better be called “Introduction to Visual Culture” because that is what we are all engaged with from the moment we wake up until the end of our day. When you turn on your television, open your phone or computer, or simply walk outside you have already accessed visually any number of aesthetic objects that someone – for our purposes we’ll call her an artist – made choices about in its presentation

Smarthistory is a tiny not-for-profit that collaborates with more than eight hundred art historians, curators, archaeologists, knowledge-bearers, and artists committed to rewriting the colonial legacies of art history, making the history of art accessible to more people, in more places, than any other publisher. We work hard to make our essays and videos engaging while retaining depth, nuance, and analytic rigor.

This book aims to act as amap through the world of African art. As such, it will help define the competencies students need to develop–visual analysis, research, noting what information is critical, asking questions, and writing down your observations–and provide opportunities to practice these skills until you are proficient.

Reframing Art History, an open-access multimedia art history textbook, gives you a guided journey through the living, breathing, meaningful side of art history. We’re less concerned with names and dates than with meaning and movement. With chapters developed by a group of more than 50 experts, it showcases art and history from the bottom up.
